Why Porn Doesn’t Belong on the Blockchain

So you want to store data safely, in a ledger accessible to everyone, where the government and law enforcement agencies can’t touch?

Why not try blockchain?

I can assure you, it’s more than just a buzz word. In fact, there’re no community guidelines bull shit in this space. So much so that it’s called the “Wild-wild West of Tech”.

A Tube Porn Blockchain?

Judging by the title of this article, you probably think that I’m some crunchy and confused writer. Don’t you?

Well, I wouldn’t blame you.

Blockchain for porn is an idea that many in the crypto space have been rooting for, for a while now. This article will not dispute the benefits of blockchain technologies in the porn industry, but instead highlight the problem of eliminating the central administrator, without a plan to enforce morality in this technological wild west.

So, does porn belong on the blockchain?

Where Adult Entertainment Meets Blockchain

The Kiss, an 1896 film, is widely considered as the first pornographic movie. As its producer, Thomas Edison can also be remarked as owning the first pornographic firm in the world. Ever since the 18-minute film, the adult film industry has grown tremendously. At the center of this growth, were many technological innovations, including the internet, which have all propelled porn to the mainstream.

However, there remain many issues facing this entertainment sector. Blockchain technology is seen as the right kind of technological innovation to take porn to the next level in its quest to catering to consumer needs.

Indeed, the collaboration could produce revolutionary results. But, don’t you think the opportunity costs of forgoing the advantages of having a central authority is far greater than the benefits of blockchain technology? Especially when the lawlessness already reigns over the industry?

There’s also no clear indications that any efforts of regulating the industry will be accepted in the community. Is this the kind of environment we would want to bring porn into?

Case Study: Blockchain Porn on Google Search

Have you by any chance, Googled the term ‘Blockchain Porn’? Let me let you in on a secret. If you conduct this search anytime during the second quarter of 2019, the first three pages of the search results all contain content related to child pornography.

Isn’t this enough to convince you that there is an issue to address? Unfortunately, there’s no one to report these issues to.

The thing that makes blockchain so revolutionary is that it’s decentralized in nature and does not rely on trust. What does this mean?

By running a full bitcoin node on your computer, you’re merely operating a record of all transactions and content stored on the blockchain. Now consider this. Operating something similar to a warehouse of digital content, among them, unfortunately, reportedly includes some volumes of Child pornography is on the blockchain.

Bottom-line

While blockchain applications in the porn industry is a step in the right direction, there are many issues with associating porn with a decentralized, incorruptible, and immutable ledger system.

Don’t you think?
